How we die - an interview with the author Connie Smolny

The Death belongs to life. So of course this moment is so different are his interpretations of history. Every culture has its own, each period a new approach to the memento mori, the awareness of our mortality, developed. Today, it seems as if we are dying further banish from our lives. The current cult of eternal youth can ignore the expiration of the people at the end of his life and really just drive out. Or not? The author Connie Smolny deals in her latest book with new and future ways of dealing with death and burial, but also draws attention back to past centuries. We spoke with the author:

first What is the central message of your book?
Dealing with death and dying is subject to constant change. The fear of death had previously ostensibly a fear of eternal damnation, and today it is more the fear, loneliness and connected deported in a nursing home or to an armada of tubes and instruments, also lonely and yet also delivered fully to take the last breath.
was why my themes in the book, for example, the growing diversity in the funeral services in the European culture. The relationship of the Society for the suicide of the Stoics to the dying as a paid service, or the death and the expectations of the time after that will be discussed in the major religions of the world as well as the processing of death in art, literature and music.

second Why you should read your book?
Not only when the thick November fog lay heavy and gray over landscapes and cities, once used to like a book. In November, if memory is celebrated on days such as All Souls and Remembrance Sunday, the subject of death is nearer than months, in which all flowers and greenery. Reading this brief cultural history of death can be the one informing and forming, but also comforting and exhilarating. Through their diversity, it is interesting and catches your attention by more and more aspects of the same subject. This release looks different and can thus expand the horizons of readers and to raise awareness concerning for some, dealing with death and dying. Death means loss, pain and grief. And in the end, the question arises: What remains? What effect has my life on my death?

third Why She herself is the subject so interesting?
The subject interested me for many years. Personal experiences with death and dying, both professionally and personally have increased the desire to write this little cultural history. The fact that nothing and no-one is spared, that with this inevitability accept all need and it makes no sense to close off the death of life, as it provides then to take the harder, all that and much more fascinated me personally at death. He remains, though he is in science, culture and society deals with continuously and analyzed, often mysterious and sinister.

4th Who do you book appeal to?
The brief cultural history of death is of interest to all who wish to address this issue, either because they have pushed the death so far, she has captured the gray November Blues or the LOSS of a relative or good friend event is thus to address. As it ages and all walks of life concerns and is illuminated from different sides, new and fascinating aspects related to all.

matter was fun to build it all, him.
And now waits a schööönes Advent Breakfast on us.

For years we make a trip there before Christmas. And Miss

The Christmas tree in the forest is an attraction for many visitors. Many a small thing to bring
to decorate it.
to bird seed, nuts and carrots for the forest dwellers is also expected.
I think this tree sooo beautiful - and like last year we had this year the luck that we could take our sleds in the snow and round the tree.

lost time - a comment by Jürgen Haase

A commentary on the Book: lost time? DDR-life stories, in retrospect - a collection of interviews / photographs with Portrait Monique Ulrich

Maybe the past would prefer to call the future Verlag publishing house? ...
... and perhaps young historians past describe unbiased and honest

exactly eighteen life stories written by young historians, but are not a representative cross-section of life in the former GDR, but a significant contribution of wisdom to a better understanding of processes, ways of life and in two former countries, which border both sides of the former probably many years to come Declaration requirements will trigger.
For the book "Lost time?" describes conditions of a fallen Republic, may be better incorporated in a Republic, describes some of the few hereditary radicals of the work of our fathers and forefathers, from which one but your honest, fair and correct especially! should derive conclusions for the future. A property that we Germans have gone many times, we describe the iconoclast, the weavers revolt or many major accomplishments of the people in the former GDR. But that's precisely what that is those that joined had hoped and been disappointed in many ways. Perhaps this book is a little those eyes open, that were never in the former East Germany, but wanted even before knowing all the people there moving and for this - just such propaganda knowledge, as once in the GDR - derived conclusions in the next few decades will reverberate. If even the Rhineland or Bayer or the Lower Saxony and Saarland, reading this book, the "red" Hans Modrow perhaps baiting, ideology, imputes Communist hard-liner body and propaganda or Herbert Mießlitz condemned for its "Western" theory, so does the book but also to the words of those people who can not unconditional loyalty system is said to have. Here comes the scientist Hans Misselwitz to the conclusion that one gets one's freedom as a gift from anyone, and also the singer of Pankow, Andre Herzberg was not sure, the adaptation and self-submission was proper. The interview with the author Klaus Kordon also speaks "volumes" by running before the start of his interview that he would not appear anywhere in a band with DDR-Schön speakers between two covers. There is a priest who comes to word and a nurse, also with in the dance, to show that an effort was made by the young author team but to the collection of opinions and attitudes of broad sections of the population of the former GDR.
A word here about the authors. I think it's good, strong and brave, to take up the story that many politicians today want to hide you. I think it's good that they are putting forward to a iconoclasm occurred, like always in Germany to breaks aimed at condemning the past or to deify make, bad, or to lift into the sky, absolutely devastating to deal with this. The fact that this time and a lot of good people, have done much good even under a different regime than the current one, that they had well designed and has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with generalizing glorification of DDR! It has to do simply with the fact that our young writers are now on the right track to realize that home and people not connected to a draped to do generalized ideological prejudice and already have nothing to do with a ruling on his own ignorance. Though there may not have their own experiences to the image of a thing, yet it is not as honest and fair to his fellow human beings to interpret the Challenging and truthfully. We owe these young people very much.
I have read this book, have in many of these life stories of their own, which again found my family, my friends, my fathers, as well as the formative influences of the growing rift between East and West, by the propaganda of both Pages to motivate its citizens were being exploited. I could feel, find reviews, in life, are "our former" East German citizens from the soul spoken. Simply because this was our life, had to just because we were born into a system in which we seek our place and only work out and fight. Because had seventeen million East Germans cope well in sclerotic state structures, as did 68 million Germans. A fact that is now a popular swept under the table, not only of politics but also like the economy, reached with the accession of astronomical profits in times of crisis and the - admittedly very ailing economy - ausschaltete mercilessly. What was destroyed in order to advance science and technology, in research, education, health and safety potential of a little arrogant and big man addicted will not be in decades to catch up again. Just as mercilessly, as was then driven in the following years by an unprecedented privatization action, the living conditions of hundreds of thousands of families from one day to the other from the government-sanctioned security and safety in the basic needs of the capitalist, which has now auszubaden the state.

Perhaps this collection of interviews made good on the way to reduce prejudices and reservations on both sides, generalizing elements from the East-West debate to eliminate. In any case, it is a good work on the way to a better mutual understanding, fair or friendly encounter between citizens of the two erstwhile enemies made "German states. And so at the very beginning of actually offered the same eye level, to everyone's advantage. A trait that miss many of the citizens acceded to the old Federal Republic as painful as the solidarity among and between them. Maybe it even lives in the discussion of a far-reaching reform of democratic structures, in the opinion of many people is long overdue, but hardly realized with activism as the station project Stuttgart 21 purposeful can. In any case, I author, interviewer, editor, and understood, first of all the interviewees, it should be a well-meant contributing to the development of society in a democracy, all determined to work on the Germans happy.

Bon Voyage Poem For Daughter

The end of Bruckhausen?

call to the History Workshop Du-Nord: In recent weeks are in Bruckhausen in the course of planning a "green belt" several buildings have been demolished. We urge the city of Duisburg to hereby to stop the demolition immediately.
Bruckhausen shows as an ensemble as the last district in the Ruhr area, the close juxtaposition of industrial and residential development, as for the Region was typical. Bruckhausen is a historic landscape of high historical value. In 2007, the Rheinische Conservation Office looked through "The density of historic buildings and their clear association with the opposite
plants" found it necessary to stimulate the expulsion of a large part of the district Bruckhausen, including the complete today's "redevelopment area" as a memorial area. Bruckhausen as monument area has been examined in the context of the Green Belt planning never. The public interest in the preservation of a unique backdrop Ruhr has not been balanced against other interests, the preliminary study treated only individual values listed buildings and also only part of the historically important material. We think this is a serious omission. Bruckhausen about to be torn down at the moment in which the district for decades, it finally feeling better. The environmental impacts have fallen significantly and will continue to fall. For more than 20 years, many public funds flowed into the neighborhood and have contributed to the development. And, not least to the trained first difficult years, a Turkish-born middle class, Bruckhausen and regards Germany as his home and now deprived of his property and his home is. Just this example built by immigrants have sometimes very expensive maintenance work on its over 100 year old houses to the protection of our German heritage proved a valuable service. Bruckhausen announced today the chance to be a normal, more livable neighborhood. More than that: As a large proportion of the houses has become one of the city, there is a unique opportunity to implement a real reform and thus to give the city a unique, living memorial. We have to put a positive vision for the north of Duisburg be developed that supports the emerging trends and opportunities exploited, rather than bring about the destruction of our cultural heritage and social structures. We therefore call for a moratorium on Bruckhausen - the immediate stop to the demolition and the development of a new restructuring plan which complies with the listed building self-confidence, and provides potential opportunities exploited, rather than bring about the destruction of our cultural heritage and social structures.
